Samora’s Healing Project, which spans 11 years and involves over 25 different states, works to show the complexity and multi-dimensionality of human expression and emotions. The project voices the damages caused by our systems in reference to prison and detention. He does so by providing a counter vision that condemns the labeling of a person and communities as just one thing, rather presents the diverse array of attributes that make us all human. Samora ultimately leaves us with a message of perseverance. Bringing us hope by exhibiting the passionate and profound ways that people heal themselves and their communities from trauma. Art as a form of activism allows us to ultimately find the commonalities between us all and stand in solidarity for a more just future. When many are stripped of their voice, art stands as the witness.
